Ten of America's brightest middle school science students competed in a series of challenges at the 17th annual Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge for the chance to win $25,000 and the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist.” Students presented a scientific innovation that they created to solve a problem found in everyday life to a panel of judges as well as competed in a series of additional challenges at the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, MN.
Hannah Herbst from Boca Raton, FL won the grand prize and claimed the title of "America's Top Young Scientist" for her Ocean Energy Probe, which aims to provide a stable power source and fresh water to developing countries around the globe by using untapped energy from ocean currents.
